6. Hydro Resource Conservation Device and Process Development for Refineries - HIDRITER

Period:

2008 / Present

Description:

The main objective of this project is to develop technology to reduce water consumption in cooling towers of petroleum refineries. Cooling towers generate a large amount of water vapor which could supply enough water for a medium size town. Two guidelines can be followed: firstly, to pre-cool water in heat exchangers with no water evaporation, decreasing the need of open cooling towers. The proposed equipment will probably involve heat pipe and thermosyphon technology. A second guideline is to develop technology to recover the water evaporated by the cooling towers.
